May 22, 2001 brought us Break the Cycle by Staind. This was one of the hottest records that year, and I loved it when it was released. Break the Cycle spent three weeks at the top of the Billboard charts.
The greatest thing about Staind, of course, is the voice of vocalist Aaron Lewis. I can listen to this guy sing all day, even when it’s country music like his new solo album Sinner. Aaron Lewis has such a soothing soulful voice as evidenced in hit ballads like “It’s Been Awhile” and “Outside”, but he can also offer full on metal screams like in “Can’t Believe”.
It was impossible not to be exposed to this album if you were alive 15 years ago. I feel like I heard “It’s Been Awhile” on the radio every time I hopped in the car. And you know what? I didn’t care. It’s just that good of a good song.
This album has plenty of great low end, dropped tuning, crunchy riffs from guitarist Mike Mushok. It’s not just ballads here. Some great hard rockers are on this album like “Open Your Eyes”, “Waste”, and the hit single “For You” carry this album to glory.
The lyrics have a a very somber tone and are filled with the despairs of life. Aaron Lewis could really use some Christmas cheer based on the majority of these lyrics. The album went platinum 5 times so hopefully that extra cash made life a bit happier.
