M.M. Album Rating : 5/5 (One Of The Holy Grails Of Heavy Metal Music)
With the exception of Black Sabbath, no other band is as important to Heavy Metal music as Judas Priest has been. They (just like Sabbath) took their working class roots from the industrial town of Birmingham, England to make a very dark, and hard sounding type of music. What set them apart from Sabbath though was they played the music much faster. They added the “two guitar assault” of K.K. Downing, and Glenn Tipton, that bands like The Allman Brothers had brought to Rock And Roll music in the late 1960s, adding much more power to the Metal sound. All through the 1970s Priest made solid album after solid album, perfecting their craft to truly shine in the next decade.
Finally in 1980 with the release of their sixth album “British Steel” now known as a heavy metal masterpiece, they were able to begin to develop a following in America. With their next album “Point Of Entry” that did have some great moments, but took a different direction that ended hurting the momentum gained at the beginning of the decade. By the time they began recording their ninth album they had regrouped, and would release what should’ve been the true follow up to British Steel. An album that would be the first introduction to the band for many fans (including myself) the now classic album “Screaming For Vengeance”. Bringing back the melodic hooks that made not only British Steel, but classic 70s albums for the band like “Sin After Sin”, but also keeping the very hard sound they had developed on Point Of Entry. Vengeance would become a huge commercial breakthrough, and finally gave they both not only the recognition, but also the respect they deserved.
As Priest would tour America to promote the new album in 1982, with bands like Iron Maiden, Krokus, and Uriah Heep opening for them, they soon realized that one of the songs they originally thought was a throwaway “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin'” was getting the best feedback from the record. As Metal God Rob Halford once said, “We put that song near the end of the album because we felt it was a throwaway, and one of the weakest tracks. It was one of the last songs recorded, so we just buried it on the end of the album.” Well obviously that wasn’t the case as of 2017 that song remains one of the Greatest Metal Anthems of all time.
Today this album still sounds relevant and as fresh as ever. It rocks from start to finish, and is even more of a reminder of why Priest is one of the greatest bands not just in Metal, but of all time. The fact that they are still not in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame is laughable, and proof that institution needs to get their act together when it comes to the whole Heavy Metal genre. Screaming For Vengeance is just one of many highlights from this legendary band. If you say you’re a Metal fan, and don’t own this record, well you have no credibility.
